At Muhlenberg, Art History and Studio Art are housed together in the Art Department. Each discipline informs the other, providing art students with a more nuanced understanding of their field.

The study of art is enriched further by experiential learning opportunities. Art history majors frequently intern in museums and galleries across the Lehigh Valley. Muhlenberg’s location offers easy access to art hubs in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and faculty regularly sponsor trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

Muhlenberg’s proximity to major metropolitan areas also makes it easy to invite artists, art historians, critics and visiting scholars into the classroom. These experts bring fresh perspectives to campus, present exciting work in our gallery spaces and share their insights with students.

Also on campus, the Martin Art Gallery hosts national and international exhibitions as well as faculty and student shows. The gallery is home to the renowned Tonner Collection, which includes several thousand prints ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary times. Students work closely with supportive faculty and staff to create dynamic exhibitions that appear throughout the year.

The Martin Art Gallery

A vibrant piece of Muhlenberg’s arts and culture, the Martin Art Gallery brings in exhibits of all genres and media to campus and offers the space to display student and faculty-created works of art.
