Expectations and Resources: The most important part of a Muhlenberg professor’s job is teaching. Our college and department value pedagogies that incorporate active learning and innovative techniques. There are numerous opportunities for professional development in teaching on campus; in particular, the Muhlenberg Center for Teaching and Learning (MCTL) offers regular programming throughout the year to support and develop faculty pedagogy. The college also supports travel to pedagogical workshops and conferences. For this position, we expect that the person we hire will typically teach one or two sections of introductory statistics each semester as well as courses in applied mathematics, which could include (but is not limited to) differential equations and operations research. Our introductory statistics course emphasizes hands-on learning using R to analyze real-world data. While typically our courses are taught to undergraduates, there is an opportunity to teach courses in our college's new master’s degree program in Applied Analytics.
An ongoing research program is also expected of tenure-track faculty. Start-up funds are available to incoming faculty for their research and grants are available to support faculty scholarship during the summer. Research with students is particularly valued and Muhlenberg offers funding to support student summer research. Funding is available to both faculty and students to travel to disciplinary conferences.
We are a collegial department and institution. Faculty from different departments co-mingle through regular social events organized by the Amdur Faculty Club as well as MCTL events, informal gatherings for lunch at our dining commons, as well as through campus-wide committee work. Service in committee work, both at the college and departmental level, is eventually expected of faculty members but typically not during their first year at the college.
Application Materials: A complete application will include (1) a letter of application describing your interest in our position, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a teaching statement describing your experience and philosophy, (4) a research statement that includes a list of any supervised student research projects, (5) a statement summarizing professional experiences and capacities that prepare you to contribute to our diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging commitments (see DEIB Initiatives), and (6) all graduate transcripts. To initiate your application, please click here to be directed to the Career Portal.
Applications received by December 9 2024 will receive full consideration. If you have any questions, please contact the search chair Dr. Elyn Rykken via her email [email protected]. Questions regarding Muhlenberg’s Workday Applicant portal may be directed to [email protected].
