Who should take the exam?

Students who are considering a pre-health track and/or a major in the natural sciences must take the placement exam in chemistry.

When should students take the placement exam?

Incoming first year students should take the placement exam before summer advising in order to receive a recommendation.

Students who were not able to take the placement exam during the summer advising period before their first year should take the placement exam before the registration period for each semester:

  • Take the exam in October before Spring semester registration in November.
  • Take the exam in March before Fall semester registration in April.
  • Please inform your academic advisor that you have taken the exam and have them email the department chair to ensure that your exam result is processed and the information is uploaded to Workday before your registration day.

What is the purpose of taking the placement exam?

The purpose of the placement exam is to enable us to assess your chemistry knowledge when we recommend a chemistry course for you. Our suggestion will be based on both the exam score and your responses to the Chemistry Placement Questionnaire. The recommendation will be available for you to discuss with your academic advisor when you register for courses.

Is the placement exam also an exemption test?

No. Please note this is a Placement exam and not an Exemption test. That is, no requirement is waived as a result of the exams alone, so it is to students' advantage to make their best attempt on the exam.
