Paul Murphy joined Muhlenberg College in 2015 as Chair of the Music Department. He previously served as the Chair of Music Theory, History, and Composition at SUNY-Fredonia. He received the M.M. and Ph.D. in music theory from UT-Austin, and the M.M. and B.M. in piano performance from Texas Christian University and the University of New Mexico respectively. An active scholar and teacher, Paul is lead author of The Musician's Guide to Aural Skills, 3rd ed. (W. W. Norton 2016) and author of the Spanish/English edition General Rules of Accompaniment: José de Torres's Treatise of 1736, (Indiana University Press, 2000). With interests encompassing Spanish harmonic theories of the Baroque period, music history and pedagogy, early twentieth-century music, and somatic practices, his research has appeared in journals such as Eighteenth-Century Music, Theoria, Studies in Medievalism, The Journal of Music Teacher Education, and The American Dalcroze Journal. He has presented lectures and papers in conferences throughout North America and Europe. He holds the Certificate in Dalcroze eurhythmics, and has a life-long experience as a piano accompanist for ballet and modern dance. Paul regularly teaches courses in counterpoint, music theory, musical form, Schenkerian analysis, post-tonal analysis, music theory pedagogy, rhythm and gesture, and the modernist period in music. Away from the desk, classroom, and piano, he enjoys learning languages, traveling, cooking, pottery, woodworking, and running.
