Doxxing Resources

Doxxing Resources:

In recent weeks, we have seen a rise in Doxxing across our campus community from members outside our community and within. Muhlenberg College is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all college community members. Doxxing, the act of publicly revealing private or personal information about individuals without their consent, is strictly prohibited and a violation of the  IV. Policy Statement on Equal Opportunity and Nondiscrimination, Section h. Online Discrimination and Harassment. 

Definition of Doxxing:

Doxxing is the intentional and malicious act of researching, compiling, and publicly disclosing private information about an individual, including but not limited to their home address, phone number, email address, social media accounts, or any other personal details that can be used to identify or locate them. Doxxing is considered intimidation and harassment under our college policies. 

Prohibited Activities:

  1. Doxxing: Any attempt to gather, share, or distribute private information about members of the Muhlenberg College community without their explicit consent is strictly prohibited.
  2. Encouragement: Encouraging or endorsing doxxing activities, whether through verbal, written, or electronic means, is also prohibited.
  3. Retaliation: Retaliatory doxxing against any member of the Muhlenberg College community for any reason, including disagreements, disputes, or conflicts, is strictly prohibited.

Reporting:

The college takes any form of intimidation or harassment seriously and will investigate every report received. Any member of the Muhlenberg College community who believes they have been a victim of doxxing or has information about a potential doxxing incident is encouraged to report it promptly. Reports can be submitted online here or via the Office of Equity & Title IX or Dean of Students Office. 

While there is not much we can do as a college when doxxing happens by members outside of our campus community, you can do some things.

Contact Local Law Enforcement:

  • In cases where the doxxing involves threats or criminal activity, it's essential to contact the local police department. Please provide them with detailed information about the incident, including any evidence you may have, and follow their instructions on how to proceed. Contact Your Internet Service Provider (ISP):

  • If the doxxing involves online platforms or social media, consider reporting the incident to your internet service provider. They can assist in addressing the issue or providing guidance on how to handle it.

Use Online Reporting Tools:

  • Most social media platforms and online services have reporting tools for various forms of harassment, including doxxing. Report the incident directly on the platform where it occurred. Provide as much detail as possible, including screenshots and links to the specific content.

Document and Preserve Evidence:

  • Preserve any evidence related to the doxxing incident. This may include screenshots, emails, or any other relevant information. Documentation can be crucial for law enforcement or other entities investigating the incident.
