Five Students, Three Faculty Participate in World’s Largest Mathematics Conference

The students and faculty presented their research at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Boston.

Last week, five students and three faculty traveled to Boston to participate in the Joint Mathematics Meetings, the largest mathematics gathering in the world. More than 5,100 people attended.

Regina Lau ’23 presents her research during the undergraduate poster session on Friday, January 6.

During the undergraduate poster session, Charles Ohanian ’24, a mathematics major, Cathy Barrish ’24, a mathematics and political science double major, and Amanda Sodl ’23, a mathematics major, pictured below, presented research they conducted with Professor of Mathematics and Chair of Mathematics & Computer Science Byungchul Cha last spring. Their poster was titled “Average Class Number of Almost Pythagorean Triples.”

Regina Lau ’23, a mathematics major and Asian studies minor, and Jake Ghamar ’23, a mathematics major, pictured below, presented research they conducted with Professor of Mathematics Michael Huber over the summer. Their poster was titled “Linear Perspective in Italian Architecture.”

Cha, Associate Professor of Mathematics Will Gryc and Truman Koehler Professor of Mathematics Linda McGuire also presented research, participated in national committee meetings and attended workshops during the conference.
