The GSPP supported me every step of the way to applying to graduate school. With the help of my academic advisor Dr. Kucik, I was able to apply and get accepted into eight journalism schools. I am currently enrolled at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University studying for my M.A. in Magazine, News and Digital Journalism. For current students looking at graduate schools, don’t close yourself off to any opportunities! Use the resources this program and Muhlenberg offers you to find a program that’s perfect for you. You can do anything you set your mind to!

The GSPP first and foremost provided connections: connections with other current Muhlenberg students, Muhlenberg faculty and staff, Muhlenberg alumni, students from other institutions and other professionals in both my academic field and the larger academy. These connections then served as opportunities to both explore my own interests at the time, and to develop new interests throughout my senior year. Being able to learn outside of my major at Muhlenberg was instrumental in choosing in what field I wanted to pursue a graduate degree, and I felt exceptionally well-prepared to start a program that was different from what I studied while at Muhlenberg. When I started my graduate program [at Syracuse University], it became clear very quickly how well-prepared I was for life as a graduate student, and I owe this level of preparation to the faculty, staff, and student participants of the GSPP - as well as the larger Muhlenberg community.

The Graduate School Preparatory Program helped to prepare me for graduate school by giving me valuable advice as I sent off applications and went through interviews. I am currently a second-year PhD student at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in the Pharmacology and Physiology program, and I conduct research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center studying congenital heart defects in the laboratory of Dr. Joshua Waxman. My advice to students thinking about going to graduate school or currently applying would be to look at the big picture for each school. Make sure you will be happy in that city for the length of your program, know how your program can support you during that time, talk to current students to see how they feel about it, and see if there are any people who could be potential mentors for you.
